Kyoto Prefectural University

History


Kyoto Prefectural University traces its origins back to the Kyoto Prefectural Agricultural School, which was founded in 1895.
It was established under the name of Saikyo University in 1949, based on the Kyoto Prefectural Agricultural and Forestry College and the Kyoto Prefectural Women’s College.
It was later renamed Kyoto Prefectural University in 1959 and continues to this day.

  • April 1, 1895: Kyoto Prefectural Agricultural School was established in Aza Shichiku Daimon, Omiya Village, Otagi-gun, Kyoto Prefecture.

  • September 18, 1896: The school was moved to the new facilities in Katsura, Kadono-gun, Kyoto Prefecture.

  • April 1, 1918: Classes were provided at the new schoolhouse in Shimogamo Village, Otagi-gun, Kyoto Prefecture.

  • March 28, 1927: The establishment of Kyoto Prefectural Women's Vocational School in Matsugasaki Village, Kyoto Prefecture, was approved.

  • April 1, 1927: Kyoto Prefectural Women's Vocational School was opened as a part of the facilities of Kyoto Prefectural Women's First High School.

  • April 1, 1933: Kyoto Prefectural Women's Vocational School was moved to new facilities in Katsura, Kadono-gun, Kyoto Prefecture.

  • April 1, 1944: Kyoto Prefectural College of Agriculture and Forestry was opened.

  • February, 1949: Under the School Education Act, the establishment of a new university was approved, based on integration of the Kyoto Prefectural Vocational School of Agriculture and Forestry and Kyoto Prefectural Women's Vocational School.

  • April 1, 1949: Saikyo University was inaugurated as a new university having two faculties, namely the Faculty of Letters and Domestic Science and the Faculty of Agriculture.

  • April 1, 1951: Saikyo Women's Junior College was established as an auxilliary facility of Saikyo University.

  • May 1 1959: Celebrating the 10th anniversary of its establishment, the names of Saikyo University and its Women's Junior College were changed respectively to "Kyoto Prefectural University" and "Kyoto Prefectural University Women's Junior College."

  • April 18, 1962: University facilities were integrated at the present location in Shimogamo, Kyoto City.

  • April 1, 1970: The Faculty of Letters and Domestic Science was divided into the Faculty of Letters and the Faculty of Domestic Science.

  • April 1, 1977: The Faculty of Domestic Science was renamed the Faculty of Life Sciences.

  • April 1, 1983: Graduate School of Agriculture established its Doctoral Course.

  • November 5, 1995: Kyoto Prefectural University celebrated the 100th anniversary of its foundation.

  • April 1, 1997: Acceptance of applications for enrollment in the Women's Junior College was discontinued.

  • April 1, 2003: Doctoral courses were established in the Department of Japanese and Chinese Literatures (Graduate School of Letters), the Department of Welfare Society (Graduate School of Welfare Society), and in the Department of Environmental Information (Graduate School of Human & Environmental Sciences).

  • April 1, 2008 : The Kyoto Prefectural Public University Corporation was established for management of Kyoto Prefectural University and Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine. Established new system consisting of 3 faculties, namely the Faculty of Letters, the Faculty of Public Policy, and the Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences. The Graduate School of Public Policy and the Graduate School of Life and Environmental Sciences were also established.

  • July 8, 2009 : Kyoto Policy Institute was established.

  • April 1, 2011 : Seika Campus was established.

  • April 1, 2012 : Vice presidential position was established.

  • October 1, 2014: Kyoto Institute of Japanese Dietary Culture was established.

  • April 1, 2017: Kyoto Institute for Regional Prospects was established.

  • April 28, 2017: The University Library was renewally opened in the "Kyoto-gaku Rekisai-kan (Kyoto Institute, Library and Archives)."

  • April 1, 2019: Department of Japanese Food Culture was established in the Faculty of Letters.

  • April 1, 2021: Industry Liaison Office, AI Data Science Education and Research Center, Disaster and Epidemic Prevention Research Center, and Center for Frontier Science History were established.
