Faculty of Letters

The Faculty of Letters is devoted to accumulating the wisdom of mankind in the area of cultural and social matters, and carrying out in-depth researches and thorough education in the specialized areas of language, literature, history, and cultural assets as well as striving to develop new fields of research and education as an intellectual base to respond to the various issues brought up by modern and regional society. Furthermore, we also cultivate useful human resources that can respond to regional culture and issues, and contribute to the international society by providing students with a wide range of knowledge, rich humanity, high-level expertise, and a comprehensive perspective through ongoing research and education.

The Faculty of Letters has three departments

Department of Japanese and Chinese Literatures

In the Department of Japanese and Chinese Literatures, students study Japanese linguistics, Japanese literature and Chinese literature in their relation to each other.

Department of European and American Linguistic Cultures

In the Department of European and American Linguistic Cultures, students study European and American linguistic cultures, the English language, comparative linguistic cultures, and translation from Japanese into English.

Department of Historical Studies

In the Department of Historical Studies, students study the historical progress of society, culture and thought of the world, centering on the culture of Japan.

Kyoto! English! Cultural Heritages!

Common Minor and Programs in the Faculty of Letters

The Faculty of Letters has a minor in Kyoto Culturology to learn about the culture and tradition of Kyoto from an international viewpoint. Students can also take programs in English Communication and Study on Cultural Heritages. Any student belonging to the Faculty of Letters can take these courses and when the credits are approved, it will be reflected in their diploma upon graduation.

Common Minor and Programs in the Faculty of Letters

Kyoto Culturology Course

(Minor for Faculty of Letters) 
 This study course is especially focused on the culture of Kyoto. Students will explore the various cultural phenomena of Kyoto.
 English Communication This is a program to build high-level English proficiency for third and fourth year students who have learned foreign languages in their general courses.
 Study on Cultural Heritages This is a program to study cultural heritages, to know how to preserve, utilize, and to disseminate information, by acquiring deep and wide knowledge.
